Today’s SIMPLE Self Care TIP

Always protect your BODY inside and out by knowing what you place onto your skin. Your skin is a HUGE contributor to the body’s overall health. It is actually your body’s largest organ!

Sunscreen choices impact your BODY inside and out. A SIMPLE Self Care Micro Decision that Protects Your Entire Body is to use non-toxic sunscreen.

After a single application, a total of seven chemicals commonly found in sunscreens can be absorbed into the bloodstream at levels that exceed safety thresholds, according to studies by the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, an arm of the US Food and Drug Administration…

Choosing the best sunscreen that is non-toxic can be confusing.

As with the ‘6 FREE’ 10 &, ’13 FREE’…labeling on nail polish, we discovered labels claiming ‘FREE of 6 , 10, 13,… toxins’ didn’t mean FREE of toxins.

clear nail polish can be more toxic

Avoid Nail Polish Toxins: 2 Brands

Unfortunately, 3, 6, even 16 free doesn’t mean toxic-free. 2 Brands I tried. One I am still using.

Feel, Look, LIVE better. The Simple Self Care Lifestyle

For those who have sensitive skin/allergies finding non-toxic (which is not easy) can end up being the easiest part.

Add to it skin that reacts to Gluten, Soy, Dairy, Corn, Mango…. and sunscreen label reading can become a full-time job!

4 Brands that meet all the criteria:

The 4 Brands:

Each year I dig deep into researching sunscreen. Staying on top of ingredients that move into and out of products.

Over the past weeks, I’ve reviewed ‘safe’ sunscreens again and have the 4 Brands with.

  • EWG rating of 1
  • Gluten, Dairy, Soy, Corn, Mango Free

The 4 Sunscreen choices along with:

  • How I chose them
  • Direct links
  • Linked references for you.

How I Choose the 4 Brands

Step 1

EWG’s Guide

I comb through EWG’s Guide to Sunscreens. The research is very thorough.

The detailed explanations and recognition of the longer and longer list of toxins that are being absorbed into our body is concerning. (I’ve linked to various EWG pages for you on specific ingredients to really be aware of.)

Having EWG’s research to delve into is fantastic when it comes to deciphering what is currently the best non-toxic Sunscreen options.

Using EWG’s list, I’ve been able to:

  • choose the safest sunscreens (rated 1)
  • then take those that are Non-toxic to research, moving me to Step 2.

Step 2

words: Review 182 Sunscreen Products Find Best Sunscreen

Review Products with a Rating of 1 and Find Those That Are Gluten, Corn, Soy, Dairy & Mango Free

There were 15 pages of Sunscreens rated 1.

That was a total of 182 I looked at.

The 4 brands (which have multiple products) are the final list that met all the criteria of being:

  • Non-Toxic (EWG Rating of 1)
  • Gluten-Free
  • Soy Free
  • Dairy-free
  • Corn Free
  • Mango Free
Hand holding pencil, Text on top process to find the best sunscreen

  • I read through the individual product ingredients to find GF, SF, CF, DF, & Mango Free.
  • If an ingredient can be derived from one of the listed ingredients I want to avoid, I write to the company asking for clarification.

Contact Companies for Ingredient Clarification:

– Remove Those With Ingredients on My List

I’ve eliminated Brands when the companies respond to my questions, affirming one or more of the derivatives ARE in their products.

– Keep Brands That Verify ALL Ingredients Are Free From The Items and Derivatives of The Items On My List.

The result: 4 Brands to share.

The Safest Brands When It Comes to Nontoxic and Free of Gluten, Corn, Soy, Dairy, Mango

I have all 4 Brands.

* Going on ‘White’ is always my biggest complaint. The tinted Kabana and tinted Badger were the ones that helped tone down the ‘white look’

Along with Kabana’s regular original lotion, it has nude, tan, and bronze. I mixed them as well.

The Badger tinted works well, but I am very light. You will have to play with each. I’ll be mixing the Kabana because as skin tone changes and then changes back again, I can play with the coverage color by mixing.

It is easier to tolerate the white tint while at the beach. At the beach, I know I want the sunscreen to sit on my skin for the best protection and NOT absorb into my body.

Sunscreen Absorbs Quickly into the Bloodstream & Sticks Around

In recent years, studies have shown that many of the common chemical ingredients used in sunscreens are absorbed into the body’s bloodstream at concentration levels higher than the FDA’s safety threshold. One concern is that the chemicals can disrupt hormones in the body (1)

….it helps to know that sunscreens are either mineral- or chemical-based.
Some sunscreens contain both.

Mineral sunscreens sit on the skin’s surface to deflect the sun’s rays.
Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, penetrate the skin and absorb the sun’s rays.

I am really excited about 2 things when it comes to this company.

1- The mission aligns with everything posted on thesimpleselfcarelifestyle.com. Each tip, tool, product, and program revolves around self care right DOWN TO OUR CELLS.

Kabana states that it keeps this in mind too:

Kabana realizes skin is the gateway to the rest of your body. Our personal care products are designed to nourish not only your skin, but also be healthy for your body as a whole; your tissue, your organs, your nervous system, your reproductive tract, your children (even if you don’t have them yet). bold added

We choose ingredients that are biochemically identical to the building blocks your body already uses. This approach eliminates concern about chemical exposure and bioaccumulation, and maintains your health throughout a long life.

Reviewers on their site express being pleasantly surprised with the added benefit of improvement of their skin issues. I’ll update you on this one!

TIP:

It is important to check every product label of a BRAND to make sure each product from that brand matches the criteria you are looking for.

Many companies may have A fantastic PRODUCT that matches all the criteria you need, but another of the same brand may not fit the criteria you need. Please always always check ingredient lists.
