Protect your skin this summer with the best sunscreen that is:
- non-toxic
- gluten free,
- corn free,
- soy free,
- dairy free
- mango free
Todays SIMPLE Self Care Lifestyle tip:
🎯 Protect your skin; your body’s largest organ; by using non-toxic sunscreen.
4 Sunscreen brands created for everyone including those with sensitive/allergenic skin.
Choosing the best sunscreen that is non-toxic can be confusing.
As with the ‘6 FREE’ 10 &, ’13 FREE’…labeling on nail polish we discovered labels claiming ‘FREE of 6 , 10, 13,… toxins’ didn’t mean FREE of toxins.
For those who have sensitive skin/allergies finding non-toxic (which is not easy) can end up being the easiest part.
Add to it skin that reacts to Gluten, Soy, Dairy, Corn, Mango…. and sunscreen label reading can become a full time job!
4 Brands that meet all the criteria:
The 4 Brands:
I needed to dig deep into researching sun screen again this year because 3 of the products I used and loved for close to a decade are not available anymore. 😞
I spent many days over the past weeks reviewing ‘safe’ sunscreens.
- Reviewing EWG ratings of (1);
- Reading labels;
- Writing emails to companies.
I just placed my sunscreen order and am happy to have found 3 new brands that I am excited to use.
I’m also happy that I still can lean on one brand I am familiar with.
Below my top sunscreen choices I’ve also included:
- how I chose the sunscreens
- resources with links
- as well as linked references for you.
This year’s list:
- 3 NEW brands.
- 1 brand I’ve used for a very long time.
EWG rating 1.
Non-nano zinc oxide, artesian water, EVOO, beeswax, vitamin E (from sunflower seeds), and vitamin D.
They make tinted versions which have gotten excellent reviews.
I really am excited about 2 things when it comes to this company.
1- The mission aligns with everything posted on thesimpleselfcarelifestyle.com Each tip, tool, product and program revolves around self care right DOWN TO OUR CELLS.
Kabana states that it keeps this in mind too:
Kabana realizes skin is the gateway to the rest of your body. Our personal care products are designed to nourish not only your skin, but also be healthy for your body as a whole; your tissue, your organs, your nervous system, your reproductive tract, your children (even if you don’t have them yet). bold added
We choose ingredients that are biochemically identical to the building blocks your body already uses. This approach eliminates concern about chemical exposure and bioaccumulation, and maintains your health throughout a long life.
2nd- I’m very intrigued to see if Kabana helps the clients of practitioners I work with.
Specifically their clients with skin issues like psoriasis.
Reviewers on their site express being pleasantly surprised with the added benefit of improvement of their skin issues. I’ll update you on this one!
* Extra note: When confirming the ingredients list with CEO & Chief Formulation Chemist of Kabana Skin Care he shared the following products (NOT SUN SCREEN products but other Kabana products) contain soy, and/or oil derived from wheat.
They are:
“Our Kabana Crème moisturizer contains soy lecithin.
The DE’A line of facial products and Vitamin E Rejuventor creme use wheat germ oil.
All sunscreens are free of ingredients you’ve listed.”
The take away: Many companies may have A fantastic PRODUCT that matches all the criteria you need. BUT
It is important to check every product label of a BRAND to make sure each product from that brand matches the criteria you are looking for.
EWG rating 1.
Certified organic ingredients.
𝗣𝗢𝗪𝗘𝗥𝗙𝗨𝗟 𝗦𝗨𝗡 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗧𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡:
Provides highly effective SPF 50 broad spectrum UVA & UVB protection that is both water and sweat resistant.
Gentle enough for baby’s sensitive skin yet strong enough coverage for kids and adults.
One of the founders confirmed via email with me that their Tocopherol is derived from sunflower oil.
“Mo,
Our tocopherol is derived from non-GMO sunflower oil.”

What I re-ordered: Badger products 🔗
☀️ Badgers sunscreens are the sunscreens we have used for years.
There are ☀️ 8 that are Certified Gluten Free.
Please be aware of this when choosing Badger products if Gluten Free is a must for you.
The following list links you to the Badger products that are Certified Gluten Free.
Now Here’s How I Choose the 4.

For the past 10 years (which is approximately when they began the guide) I’ve combed through EWG’s Guide to Sunscreens.
The research is very thorough.
The detailed explanations and recognition of the longer and longer list of toxins that are being absorbed into our body is concerning. (I’ve linked to various EWG pages for you on specific ingredients to really be aware of.)
Having EWG’s research to delve into is fantastic when it comes to deciphering what is currently the best non-toxic Sunscreen options.
Using EWG’s list I’ve been able to:
- choose the safest sunscreens (rated 1)
- then take those that are Non-toxic to research.

There were 15 pages of Sunscreens rated 1 this year.
That was a total of 182 I looked at.
The 4 brands (which have multiple products) are the final list that met all the criteria of being:
- Non-Toxic (EWG Rating of 1)
- Gluten Free
- Soy Free
- Dairy free
- Corn Free
- Mango Free

- I read through the individual product ingredients to find GF, SF, CF, DF, & Mango Free.
- If an ingredient can be derived from one of the listed ingredients I want to avoid I write to the company asking for clarification.
There were multiple products that may have one or two of the ingredients.
Others I am still waiting for responses as to what some of their ingredients listed on their label are derived from.
This week four more brands got back to me but did not end up meeting the criteria.
I researched another that I thought did not exist anymore but I found out they changed their branding. I was super hopeful it’d make the list but it uses soy as their source of tocopherol (Vit E)
Two Peas Organics returned my email 👏🏻 confirming all criteria so I added them.
If more brands reach out during the Summer Season I will be sure to add them.
I have ordered all 4 Brands.
I have ordered all brands and have asked others for their feedback as they use them as well.
* Going on ‘White’ is always the biggest complaint. My hope is the tinted Kabana will work well.
Along with its regular original lotion It has nude, tan, bronze.
The Badger tinted has worked well in the past for my lightly tanned skin tone🤞🏼.
Sometimes it is easier to tolerate some white tint when we know that we want the sunscreen to sit on our skin NOT absorb into our body.
In recent years, studies have shown that many of the common chemical ingredients used in sunscreens are absorbed into the body’s bloodstream at concentration levels higher than the FDA’s safety threshold. One concern is that the chemicals can disrupt hormones in the body (1)
….it helps to know that sunscreens are either mineral- or chemical-based.
Some sunscreens contain both.
Mineral sunscreens sit on the skin’s surface to deflect the sun’s rays.
Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, penetrate the skin and absorb the sun’s rays.
As you use the various sunscreens I’d love to hear which you liked.
If you have others I can add to the list. You can reach me by emailing: simplifyselfcare@gmail.com
